Child Custody and Access
Custody and access are two different things. Custody is the right to make the important decisions about the care and upbringing of a child. It includes the right to make decisions regarding the child’s religion, school and educational programs, and medical treatment. There are different types of custody such as sole custody, joint custody, shared custody and split custody.
Access is visitation. Access visits can be unsupervised or supervised depending on what is in the best interests of the child. In most cases, access is unsupervised with an agreed upon visitation schedule between the parties.
Custody and access can quickly become the most contentious issue when parties separate. It is important to get legal advice and discuss what your options are as soon as possible.
